Manchester United is not leading the way right now in the group stage standings, but they are the current favourite to win the Europa League. They’ve won two out of their last three group stage starts in the competition and now sit with six points, just a single point behind the top spot in Group A. Things should start to get better for Manchester now, however, as Wayne Rooney is back in play. He’s contributed very little to the Manchester cause in their 2016/2017 Europa League campaign by producing just a single score in only two two games. Some more game time and some more production out of Rooney should help them move closer towards the top spot. This is all, of course, new ground for Manchester as they’ve spent their previous seasons battling it out in the Champions League, meaning that they should be more than skilled enough to take a shot at the Europa League title.
Next in line right now behind Manchester United is AS Roma. They’ve managed to stay loss free in their four group stage starts this season and now have a record that includes two wins and two draws. That has earned them enough points to stay well on top of the group E standings. Roma hasn’t been to the finals of the Europa League for a more than two decades and they’ve never finished better than second, but they have shown some steady improvement in their stats over the last few years. They’ve made it to the round of 16 elimination round in each of the last two seasons. Francesco Totti is currently leading the league for them in assists and they’ve done an excellent job of spreading the wealth in terms of goal scoring as nine of their players have recorded Europa League goals this season. That kind of depth is an essential part of competing a long term league like this one.
