With the final week of group play finishing off on the 9th of December, the elimination round of 32 is the next step for the Europa League, and the draw results for that round are in. Though, we do have to wait quite a while until we see any of these matches take place. The first set of games kicks off on February 16th.
The draw took place on the 12th of December and the resulting match-ups are as follows:

The team that dominated the group stage of the competition was Shakhtar Donetsk. They won all six of their group stage games and outscored their opponents 21-6 over the course of those matches. They’ve been paired up with Celta Vigo in their round of 32 game, a team that they should have very little trouble dispatching. While Donetsk was clearing the 20 goal mark in their group play, Vigo was lucky to get 10. They also only won two games outright in their preliminary games, leaving three of them in a draw.
FC Zenit could be considered the next most successful team to emerge from the Europa League group stage. They racked up 15 points and 17 goals. Their round of 32 match up will be slightly more difficult than that of Shakhtar Donetsk. They’ll be facing Anderlecht, a team that only lost one game outright during the preliminary round and outscored their opponents 16 to 8.
Rounding out the top three is Schalke. They also racked up 15 points with five wins and a single loss, but their wins were a lot tighter than those of the other top teams to come out of the group stage. They outscored their opponents just 9 to 3. They are going up against PAOK in the round of 32 and that should be a fairly easy match up for Shalke. PAOK only scored 7 goals over the course of their preliminary games and given Schalke’s stout defence, that offensive production should be even more severely reduced.
